Carbonite Quest?

I'm posting this for a guildie of mine.

Apparently the authors are now charging for this mod... Is this true? and is there any free versions still available?

Is it even legal for them to charge for a modification to a program that they don't own.

I don't use the mod myself thankfully|||Quote:

There is a free version, and a pay version.

The free version works fine.|||you wouldn't mind sharing where the free version is would you? I was on the website, and they say that there are no free versions currently available.|||Quote:

It was, until a few days ago. Today, however, things are different : Blizzard's UI Add-On Development Policy.

This means the death of addons such as QuestHelper (according to the author himself), Outfitter (which will soon be replaced by Blizz's own Equipment Manager anyway) and most likely Carbonite as well (which appears to be, if any, the addon to blame in this case).

I think it's a good idea (although there's a sense of dictatorship in it as well). The majority of the people using QuestHelper, that I've met, seemed to be unable to do anything without it and completely despaired the days following a big patch.|||It is still legal. It's just against Blizzard policy.

Very stupid move btw. Those addons required a lot of work on the addon makers part, work they should be allowed to charge for. I can see some lawsuits flying.|||Everyone is still waiting on Blizzards response, it may very well go to Court.|||Quote:

i dont see anything here that would indicate that carbonite is no longer working.|||Quote:

I agree with you that there's nothing there to suggest that Carbonite isn't working but part one of the policy could well put an end to Carbonite very quickly:

"1) Add-ons must be free of charge.

All add-ons must be distributed free of charge. Developers may not create "premium" versions of add-ons with additional for-pay features, charge money to download an add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, or otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on. "

As Carbonite has two versions (the quest version which is free and the full version which they charge for) I think Blizzard have made it fairly clear what they are trying to achieve.|||Quote:

Well, many things can GO to court. But, blizzard has the right to control their game as they see fit.|||Quote:

Exactly. And, guys, don't get too worked up over this. How many add-ons are there that actually charge? And why the hell would you use them? Questhelper: Craptastic. Carbonite: Craptastic. Outfitter: When did it start charging? Haven't used it in a while.

You want a leveling guide? One word: James. You want co-ords, a nice arrow to point the way (love it myself)? Cartographer and Lightheaded. Other than that, what is so useful an add-on that it's worth paying for? In all honesty this affects barely 1% if that much of the add-ons that are popular. I mean, did you LIKE having ads displayed to you in a game? It's not only an annoyance but CAN be a security risk.

Like it has been said, this is Blizzards game, and really, they're doing us a favor by not allowing people to charge to actually USE the add-on. Asking for donations still has the green light, and if people like the add-on enough and it works good enough, the donations will come.
